On May 13, after weeks of intense subtitling work for the Cannes Film Festival, I took a very early train from our local station and, after a quick breakfast in Paris, took the 7:42 train to Barcelona. From there, I shall take take an afternoon train to Valencia and, after a night in the city, travel by bus the following afternoon to a village called Arcos de las Salinas, the start of a 10-day hike through a fairly deserted area of Spain that is hike number 36 in the Recto-Verso Europe guide that I worked on last year. It’s going to be quite an adventure, with some longish days, a couple of nights in mountain huts and variations in the official trail in order to find somewhere to sleep (the only hotel in one of the villages that I was supposed to stop in has informed me that they are closed for family reasons). Most of the villages that I’ll be passing through have a population of less than 100 people, so I shall be carrying a fair amount of (dried) food with me just in case. My hike ends in the village of Albarracin which looks absolutely spectacular in photos. More to follow over the next ten days…
